Aqua Utility Services – formerly Aqua Chemical Solutions (“AQS”) – conducted a “Study” on the treatment of sulfide within a sludge transmission line from the City of Jeffersonville WWTP. The tranfer line runs for approximately 2.8 miles from the Mill Creek Pumping Station of the City of Jeffersonville Wastewater Treatment plant. The transmission line is a force main which flows from the Mill Creek Pumping Station through a 14 inch line to a Parshall Flume structure located in a channel of the treatment plan headworks. It is this force main which generates a significant amount of sulfide. The Odalog readings at the juncture of force main was over 150 ppm. Therefore, it is not surprising the headwork has suffered significant damage due to sulfide related corrosion.
It is also reasonable to assume sulfide related odors emitted from the 10th Street Pump Station, Spring Street Pumping Station and the Kruchers Food Waste force mains are largely the result of additional headwork’s hydrogen sulfide generated within the Parshall Flume channel of the Jeffersonville Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The resulting O&M costs associated with untreated sulfide laden sewage are undoubtedly very high. Further, the health and safety issues associated with high levels of sulfide are well documented. Levels in excess of 400 ppm in the atmosphere are often fatal. Levels in excess of 20 ppm within the headworks certainly pose a significant life threatening hazard to workers and extreme care should be taken for those individuals who may be exposed to gases from this area.
In some of our conversations with your staff it was noted that there are continuous complaints of odor from the surrounding US Census hub and other citizens. One can certainly feel the results of irritation of the eyes and respiratory system within 150 feet of the area along the roadways and nearby buildings.

The Odor Terminator I Method, is designed for long-term treatment in force mains from 2 to 24 hours of retention time. The oxygen generated from peroxide or from direct injection of oxygen reacts with the catalyst to produce free radicals for treatment of sulfide on contact. A slower acting oxidant is also present that reacts with the catalyst over time for long-term treatment. The presence of an oxidant within the force main also acts to prevent further development of sulfide.
Oxidant Cost Considerations
Oxygen is the best oxidant of choice for Odor Terminator I treatment for long retention time treatment of sulfide within sewerage transmission lines. Saving can be substantial as compared to use of Hydrogen Peroxide for situations similar to the sewage transmission line from the Jeffersonville WWTP. For rapid treatment over short distances of transmission, peroxide is almost always the best choice.
Results revealed that the longer lasting oxidant was necessary to acheive the results required. Using Odor Terminator I provided the desired results which were achieved. Proper control of sulfide entering the Headwork’s was quickly attained using Odor Terminator I. Tests for hydrogen sulfide at Headwork were decreased significantly. Peaks of 80 to 90 ppm of hydrogen sulfide were noted prior to treatment. Treatment with Odor Terminator I reduced the level of Hydrogen Sulfide to 5 ppm. Test equipment revealed low levels of hydrogen sulfide within the Headwork’s Screens building atmosphere during Odor Terminator I Treatments. Tests of the water entering the Headwork’s confirmed low levels of sulfide in the water (<0.5 mg/l sulfide).
